The Brussels
Polyphonia
Choir
A Coeur Joie

Originally founded in 1977, the Brussels Polyphonia Choir has existed in its present form since 1990. Its objective is to work on a high-quality repertoire, stretching from 1750 to the present day, with constant attention to accuracy of style. Although principally favouring classical music, the choir occasionally works on other types of music, such as vocal jazz.

The choir is attached to the Auderghem Music Academy, where it constitutes the advanced level of the adult ensemble singing classes. In this respect, the principal themes of the work undertaken under the baton of Denis Menier are the enhancement of the singers' vocal skills as well as the musical understanding necessary for the correct interpretation of the pieces.

Tackling both a cappella pieces and those with soloists and orchestral accompaniment, the choir has performed Mendelssohn's and Bruckner's motets, Brahms's Liebeslieder, songs by Hindemith and Absil's "Bestiaire". Works performed also include Mozart's Vesperae Solemnes de Confessore and Te Deum, Berlioz's Te Deum and "Roméo et Juliette", Nees' Magnificat and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, to name but a few. The choir has recorded its own CD (available from the choir) dedicated to romantic music and vocal jazz.

A member of the Belgian branch of the international choral movement "A Cœur Joie" and of the European Federation of Young Choirs, the Brussels Polyphonia Choir has represented Belgian choral singing at international festivals in Albi, Nancy, Linz and Lisbon (as part of the Europalia-Portugal festival). With more than a third non-Belgian singers, the choir from time to time organises exchanges with foreign choirs (Portugal and Italy).

The Brussels Polyphonia Choir is supported by Auderghem's Music Academy and administrative council in addition to the Brussels region's Committee of the French-speaking Community.

Denis Menier

Denis Menier was born in Brussels where he learned to play the flute from an early age. At the age of 16, he won the Pro-Civitate competition for young Belgian musicians, organised by the Crédit Communal de Belgique bank (now Dexia Bank).

After secondary school, Denis Menier entered the Brussels Royal Conservatoire where he gained first prize in the flute and chamber music categories, followed by advanced diplomas in flute and chamber music. He was then employed as flute teacher from 1978 to 1986.

Alongside his instrumentalist and teaching career, Denis Menier specialises in choral conducting with Pierre Cao (Luxembourg) and Frieder Bernius (Germany). He obtained his master's degree in choral conducting from the International School of Choral Conducting in Namur, where he was then immediately employed as a teacher (from 1989 to 1995).

Denis Menier founded the "Brussels Polyphonia Choir" in 1977 and has given several concerts with this choir in Belgium as well as abroad. The repertoire includes Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Brahms, Poulenc, Hindemith and Absil.

Denis Menier has conducted the "French Community Symphonic Choir" since its founding in 1990. Leading it, he has recently performed Johannes Brahms' German Requiem and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana as well as premiering the oratorio Ishango at the Audi Jazz Festival.

From 1995 to 1999 he replaced Pierre Cao as the conductor of the Namur Chamber Choir. Leading this professional choir he has conducted works by Poulenc, Rossini, Schumann, Brahms, Bach, Vivaldi and others.

Since 1997, Denis Menier has been in charge of the Children's Choir of the "Monnaie" Opera, in the context of teaching at the Auderghem Music Academy. As well as preparing the operas staged at the "Monnaie" opera house (for example Carmen, Tosca, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges and Der Rosenkavalier), the "Monnaie" choir school also gives concerts and stages children's operas, for example Brundibar (1999) and Golden Vanity (2001-2002).

In his capacity as conductor of these various choirs, Denis Menier has participated in several recordings for radio and television. He has also taken part in recording several records (Boulanger, Honegger, Tournemire, Souris, Bartholomée, Rens, etc).

Denis Menier has taken part as a guest conductor in several international projects (Europa Cantat 1997, Voices of Europe 2000, World Youth Choir 2002), which have enabled him to perform in most of the countries in western Europe as well as Russia, Estonia, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Canada.

Professor of choral conducting at Lille University (from 1990 to 1998), Denis Menier has also taken part in several courses and master classes and has judged competitions in Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Austria and Russia.

In 2004, he was appointed professor of choral conducting at the Mons Royal Conservatoire of Music.
